Product Description: 2007 sees the centenary of scouting and the 150th anniversary of the birth of its founder, Robert Baden-Powell. Playing the Game marks these two key anniversaries and the year-long international celebration of scouting. Drawing on Baden-Powell's extensive archive, it is a rich and evocative selection of his writings, on peace - a major theme throughout his career and the theme of the centenary celebrations, on his own life, from his wonderfull idiosyncratic anecdotal autobiography and includes a healthy sprinkling of some of BP's more memorable aphorisms, such as 'I don't mind confessing I have a weakness for hippos' and 'The man who holds the average boy's attention for more than seven minutes is a genius', not to mention 'Knowledge without character is mere pie-crust'.Imbued with a strong sense of the splendour and the old-school Empire feel of Baden-Powell's work, Playing the Game offers a dazzling window into a world that's gone, but whose legacy remains alive, not least in the 28 million members of the Scouts Association.

Product Description: Five years after his death, Stieg Larsson is best known as the author of the Millennium Trilogy, but during his career as a journalist he was a crucial protagonist in the battle against racism and for democracy in Sweden, and one of the founders of the anti-facist magazine Expo. Kurdo Baksi first met Larsson in 1992; it was the beginning of an intense friendship, and a fruitful but challenging working relationship. In this candid and rounded memoir, Baksi answers the questions a multitude of Larsson's fans have already asked, about his upbringing; the recurring death threats; his insomnia and his vices; his feminism - so evident in his books - and his dogmatism. What was he like as a colleague? Who provided the inspiration for his now-immortal characters (Baksi is one of the few who appears in the trilogy as himself)? Who was Lisbeth Salander?

Product Description nTony Booth didn't just hone his political skills arguing the toss with Alf Garnett. He was born in Liverpool, that hotbed of political activism; his uncle was close to Bessie Braddock, MP and de facto uncrowned monarch of the city; and he did his first canvassing (for Philip Voss, the beaten Labour candidate) at the age of 14 in the 1945 General Election. Throughout an incident-packed life, which includes a very cushy National Service in Paris where he became gigolo to a socialist and former resistance leader, a spell in the Merchant Navy, years in rep before sudden ‘overnight' stardom in Till Death Do Us Part, several marriages (including Pat Phoenix, the femme fatale of Coronation Street, who died of cancer) and an alcoholic lost decade, he has clung to the political principles instilled into him in his youth. These have brought him at various times into collisions with Hugh Gaitskill, Wilson, John Prescott and Gordon Brown, and lifelong friendships with the likes of Michael Foot and Tony Benn. n nNone of this, however, could have prepared him for the happenstance which led his daughter Cherie to fall in love with and marry the future Prime Minister. Tony Booth's position as Tony Blair's father-in-law has given him an uniquely privileged insight into the life of the nation's first political family. And he isn't shy of speaking his mind.

Yet it was his persistent need to prove his manhood that contributed to his early death.

Product Description: For more than 30 years, Gay Byrne has broadcast on Irish radio and television. He tells his life story of growing up in Dublin and how he became a household name by the time he was 30. He tells how he copes with the stress of stardom on his private family life. The youngest of six children growing up on Dublin's South Circular Road in the 1940s and '50s he could never have foreseen that he would become the celebrity of later years. But this son of the captain of a Guinness barge was to become a household name by the time he was 30 and establish himself as the outstanding figure in Irish life, outshining every other prominent individual by the flair and consistency of his performance and by an extraordinary capacity for hard work. Early days in radio (while working as an insurance clerk) led inevitably to television, first at Granada and then the BBC. The beginning of Telefis Eireann in 1961 opened a unique opportunity which was grasped eagerly and the Late Late Show was first broadcast - as a filler in the summer schedule - during 1962.

Product Description: Nicky Campbell, the Radio 5 Live and BBC1 Watchdog presenter, was adopted as a baby into a comfortable Protestant Scottish family. He always knew he was adopted, but didn't begin searching for his birth mother until he was in his thirties. When he found her, what she told him came as a shock. The clash of cultures, creed, and ideology between his parent's world and the world he grew up in couldn't be more striking. In this refreshingly candid book, he tells the story of his journey to find his parents, the dark secrets that have been revealed, and the journey he had to make after finding them. n nAbout the Author nNicky Campbell has been a radio broadcaster since he graduated from Aberdeen University. He has worked at London's Capital Radio, Radio 1 and, since 1997, has presented a hugely popular show on Five Live. He is also a highly regarded television presenter, having appeared on such diverse shows as Wheel of Fortune and Newsnight, Top of the Pops and Panorama, and currently fronts BBC1's Watchdog.

Product Description: Spike Milligan was one of Britain's best-loved comics as well as one of the most original. In this reassessment of Spike's life and career, biographer Humphrey Carpenter has - through copious research and access to many of those closest to the great man - unearthed a character who could be as difficult and contradictory as he was generous and talented. The creator of The Goons was to influence a whole generation of comics, yet was never to feel fully valued. His periods of depression were matched by periods of high creativity - there were poems, novels, volumes of biography, as well as a television series and a one-man show as Spike searched for his best means of expression. There was also, as revealed here, his inveterate womanising. Married three times and with four children to whom he was devoted, two illegitimate children were to remain barely acknowledged.

From Library Journal: In 1994, Guinness was approached by Charles Moore, the editor of the Sunday Telegraph, to keep a diary in 1995, from which he would publish two or three selections in the paper. Obviously, Moore recognized that what he got was a better product than he had bargained for, and the result is this book. Guinness was 81 during the year of his scribbling, and readers will hope that they are as vigorous and thought-provoking when they reach that age. The actor's comments on books, paintings, other actors, and the like reveal a sharp eye and an occasional endearing quirkiness?so much so that readers who finish the book will want to invite him to lunch. Perhaps as interesting as the book is the preface by John Le Carre, the author who created George Smiley and then watched Guinness bring him to life in a series of TV dramatizations. Le Carre says that Guinness is not a comfortable companion?but he says it so gracefully that Guinness forgives him, and so will you.

Product Description: Christopher Ciccone's extraordinary memoir is based on his forty-seven years of growing up with, working with and understanding the most famous woman of our time who has intrigued, scandalized and entertained millions for half a century. Through most of the iconic star's kaleidoscopic career, Christopher played an important role in her life: as her back-up dancer, her personal assistant, her dresser, her decorator, her art director, her tour director. If you think you knew everything there is to know about Madonna, your are wrong. Only Christopher can tell the full-scale, riveting untold story behind Madonna's carefully constructed mythology, and the real woman behind the glittering facade. From their shared Michigan childhood, which Madonna transcended, then whisked Christopher to Manhattan with her in the early eighties, where he slept on her roach-infested floor and danced with her in clubs all over town - Christopher was with her every step of the way, experiencing her first-hand in all her incarnations. The spoiled daddy's girl, the punk drummer, the raunchy Boy Toy, Material Girl, Mrs. Sean Penn, Warren Beatty's glamorous Hollywood paramour, loving mother, Mrs.Guy Ritchie, English grande dame - Christopher witnessed and understood all of them, as his own life was inexorably entwined with that of his chameleon sister. He tangled with a cast of characters from artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, to Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Moss, Demi Moore and, of course, Guy Ritchie, whose advent in Madonna's life splintered the loving relationship Christopher once had with her. The mirror image of his legendary sister, with his acid Ciccone tongue, Christopher pulls no punches as he tells his astonishing story. Life with My Sister Madonna is the juicy, can't-put-it-down story you've always wanted to hear, as told by Madonna's younger brother.
