Product Description: The first volume in a spellbinding new family saga, which bears comparison with the best of Rosamunde Pilcher or Elizabeth Jane Howard In the first decade of the twentieth century, life at Northrop Hall carries on much as it has done for centuries. Dowager Lady Arndale presides over the smooth running of the house, whilst her son Charles manages the vast estate and Nanny Stone rules the roost in the nursery. Diana Arndale, just sixteen and back from finishing-school in Paris, looks forward with giddy excitement to her coming-out in London, as the protegee of her glamorous Aunt Selina. It is a well-ordered, comfortable, predictable existence, in which master and servant each knows his place. But the storm-clouds are gathering over Europe, and with the outbreak of 'The War To End Wars', the world of the Arndales and their servants is turned upside down. Life will never be the same again, for any of them...

Product Description nA tremendously heartrending and heartwarming saga of the Birmingham blitz, from the author of Danny Boy. This will make you gasp in horror at what some young women endured and cheer when our heroine wins through; it's quite simply one of the best sagas to come out in years. Lizzie is finding that life in the Birmingham blitz is hard. Her husband is away fighting in the Second World War and she has had to send her two young children away to her parents in Donegal. She's grateful for her job in munitions but not so happy when that means getting home in the blackout. Then Lizzie is attacked on one such journey. She comes around battered and bruised, unable to remember the full extent of the attack -- but she fears the worst, and is right to. Pregnant, she turns to her family in desperation, but she is told she has brought them nothing but disgrace, and is taken to a Magdalene Laundry to await the birth. For as long as she can remember, Lizzy has let other people make decisions for her. But faced with the cruelty of life behind the laundry walls, a new resolve is born. Her father declares she's no daughter of his - but Lizzy is forced to make the biggest decision of her life, to save her own daughter.

From Publishers Weekly: Can this be, as advertised, the final episode in the Harte family saga? A Woman of Substance (1979), the story of Emma Harte's triumph over poverty and illegitimacy to found England's greatest department store, and its four sequels were huge bestsellers. Now Emma's great-granddaughter, Linnet O'Neill, must defend the empire and family against evil uncle Jonathan Ainsley. But words such as granddaughter and uncle don't do justice to the complexities. It takes four and a half pages of front matter to enumerate the Harte, Kallinski and O'Neill clans whose intertwining lives drive the saga. Emma's descendants offer a helping hand to new in-laws--and the reader--by uttering sentences such as these: Through his great-grandfather, Winston the First, Emma is Gideon's great-great-aunt. But she is also Gideon's great-grandmother, because Emma was my grandmother. Weddings and funerals keep the local caterer busy and offer crescendos of activity, if scant emotion. Although Ainsley's malevolence hovers behind the story and leads to near disasters, there's never a doubt that the strong women will triumph--though not without struggle. Series devotees will take heart at the ending, which hints that Ainsley's evil will survive his death and the struggles will continue offstage even if Bradford lays down her golden pen.

Product Description: Haughty Bengals, Himalayan high points and feral strays: these are the haunting familiars of Nina de Gramont's superbly imagined collection of themed tales. Prowling through every story, these enigmatic creatures expose the hidden fears and passions of the female heart, and illuminate the deep truths about men and love. A young woman finds two dark surprises in her home: a magpie dismembered by her two cats, and an unsettling glimpse of her fiance's secret inclinations. A frustrated newlywed clings to the pampered pet which is the last vestige of her privileged upbringing, until a rangy stray shows her the true meaning of marriage. As clever and finessed as the feline disposition it celebrates, OF CATS AND MEN marks the arrival of an exciting new voice in fiction.

Synopsis: When Carnegie came to the United States of America from his home town of Dunfermline Scotland, to start his famous steel empire in Pittsburgh, there were a few Scots who followed him. Some in Scotland say these included a group of Scots who were feared in their home villages. Some say they were alchemists. Some even say their descendants settled in Pittsburgh and are still there. Idle talk and ignorant superstition. Perhaps. When long-distance truck driver Josh Spiller heads out to Furnace, Pennsylvania, the loneliness of the job is made more intense by his recent terrible row with his girlfriend. His emotional life in turmoil, he is about to embark on a horrifying sequence of events that will bring him to the edge of destruction. Behind the prosperity of Furnace lie terrible secrets, and an even more terrifying gift for revenge upon those who, like Josh, begin to show an interest in them.
