Review: This book covers the antics on and off camera of the participants of Castaway, a television experiment concerning individuals setting off to find themselves on the remote Scottish island of Taransay. The author describes in detail how the series came about and attempts to show the readers the psychological profiles of the participants in a witty and sometimes endearing fashion. Whether you like to delve into human nature or are just slightly curious to find out how our fellow man could cope in such a harsh but beautiful environment with no help apparent help from civilization, then this book is for you. Not only does it give you insights into the various tactics employed by these individuals striving for a sense of community, but it also becomes apparent the lengths people go to get their own way. Survival of the fittest is definitely an issue here. There are also many sections of the book covering the individuality of all the participants with inclusions from their private diaries and letters, something that could not be easily portrayed through the television programme. This book allows you to visit the island without the discomfort of actually having to live there. McCrum did not stay on the island for long periods of time so had the advantage of being able to observe the progress and downfalls of these brave individuals from a comfortable position. Maybe some of his observations would have been different if he had to stay there for the full term, but what is apparent is that he picks up in places where the docu-soap could not. The participants themselves will surely be delving into their souls to relay their own personal accounts of their experiences in the future. McCrum has travelled through many continents, and sees this latest edition to his work as the strangest journey yet. Perhaps you too will be able to experience the weirdness of being totally isolated, from the comfort of your armchair of course. It may inspire you to follow the road to self discovery and who knows, perhaps set out on adventures of your own. The island of Taransay clearly provided creative inspiration to some of the islanders. The book is illustrated with examples of some of the beautiful art and craft work produced on the island. Plus there are photographs of all the Castaways themselves.
